Dark Castle is a 1986 computer game for the Macintosh published by Silicon Beach Software. It was designed and illustrated by Mark Pierce and programmed by Jonathan Gay.

Dark Castle is a platform game where a young hero tries to make his way to the evil Black Knight, dodging objects as well as solving occasional puzzles. The game is notable for its use of sampled sounds to great effect. A sequel titled Beyond Dark Castle was released in February 1988. A second sequel, Return to Dark Castle, was announced in 2000, though it was not released until March 14, 2008. A Mountain Lion compatible version is currently available on Apple's app store.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a free multiplayer game based on the Return to Castle Wolfenstein game technology. A Macintosh version is now available for download. You don’t need the original Return to Castle Wolfenstein to play — this is a complete standalone product, designed specifically for online play.

In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, up to 64 players can pose as Axis or Allied soldiers in a World War II-era team based environment. You must assume the role of one of five character classes, each with different capabilities.

Developed by London-based Splash Damage — with whom id Software also collaborated to create the multiplayer levels for Doom 3 — Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was originally conceived as an add-on expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Rather than offer it as a commercial release, however, the decision was made to release it to the public for free. It’s been available since 2003 for Windows and Linux as well. This news marks the game’s Macintosh debut, thanks to the efforts of Aspyr Media Inc.’s own Brad Oliver. The Mac release is based on the new version 2.60 build, which sports optimizations and addresses client and server issues.

The game is available at the link above as a download through the BitTorrent file sharing service, a peer-to-peer system for sharing large files. If you don’t already have BitTorrent installed, you can download a Mac OS X client from the BitTorrent Web site.

System requirements were not listed when MacCentral posted this article, but requirements for the original Return to Castle Wolfenstein called for a G3/500MHz or faster, Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later, 256MB RAM, ATI Radeon 7500 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better 3D graphics with at least 32MB VRAM. The download measures about 258MB.
